Issue 4 – Learning
from Different Perspectives
We operate in a global economy with emerging
markets and learning from different perspectives is becoming
increasingly important. Many of our clients are now operating
within very diverse cultures. Our sophisticated communication
systems are connecting us with remote and very different (from
us) parts of our world. We are now more aware of the difference
in values and beliefs that exist; for example in faith/religion
or views on the causes of environmental changes in our planet
and what actions are required to address them. In the Antarctic
the area covered by ice is shrinking. Some penguins have to
find new places to live as their current habitat can no longer
sustain them. Their choices are harsh: adapt quickly, undertake
mass migration with all its challenges, or perish.
There are clear parallels within our own lives
and organisations. Change is constant and fast. Life seems
more complex than ever before. Operating in unknown territory
is part of the reality.
It is a time for inspirational leadership!
We need to be open and willing to engage in:
• Opening minds and changing mindsets
• Innovation and creativity
• Building trust
• Stretching comfort zones
• Risk-taking
• Living with uncertainty
and of course Learning from different perspectives.
This
theme is central to our 6-month Leadership Development
Path, which involves working with diverse leaders from
across sectors. Each Group has opportunities through workshops,
coaching and collaborations for new and exciting approaches
to learning. We use creative and rigorous continuous feedback
processes for participants on their leadership strengths
and potential. This provides clear and focused direction
and gives people a real understanding of what they need to
do to make a positive difference within their leadership
roles. Click through for details of the programmes and
to learn from the perspectives of participants in 2005 on
the value
of the programme. If you would like to talk to someone

PERSONAL BEST: Ten Lessons to Help You Achieve your True
Potential

Many of us will know
people who have used adversity as a positive catalyst for
change. An unexpected and challenging life experience can
give us a totally new perspective. Read how having had his
left leg amputated as a teenager Marc Woods then decided
to focus his attention on achieving greatness as a swimmer.
During a recent interview
Marc described the central message of the book
"It is important
to measure yourself against your own potential and not the
limitations of others”.
Interesting
when considering learning from different perspectives!

Here’s what our
reviewer said:
Have
we become too complacent about the power of global corporations
and their primary focus on profits for their shareholders?
Are corporations by their very nature psychopathic - however
decent the individuals who work in them?
"The Corporation" is a documentary film that looks
at the role of corporations and raises issues such as "intergenerational
tyranny" - taxation without representation of unborn generations
by our consumption of our planet’s resources.
This is uncomfortable but essential viewing. It's not all doom
and gloom: Ray Anderson, Chairman of Interface, Inc., the world's
largest commercial carpet manufacturer, on his vision
for his company: "If we're successful, we'll spend the
rest of our days harvesting yesteryear's carpets and other
petrochemically derived products, and recycling them into new
materials; and converting sunlight into energy; with zero scrap
going to the landfill and zero emissions into the ecosystem.
And we'll be doing well ... very well ... by doing good. That's
the vision."

5 THINGS YOU CAN DO TO LEARN FROM DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES
• Ask children you know for their opinions.
• Listen!
• Swap roles with a colleague for a week.
• Volunteer.
• Tune the car radio to a different channel.
We should study the true value of those whose
opinions have gained them good reputations (Marcus Aurelius, trans. Alan Jacobs)
Who do you know who has a good reputation? What
and how can you learn from them?
